Summary

Bandai Namcohas shared a first look atBleach: Rebirth of Souls' gameplay, and it looks a lot more complex than many of us were expecting after the reveal trailer.

While most anime gaming fanshave their eyes solely set on Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, the fourth Budokai Tenkaichi game isn’t the only thing worth getting excited about. Earlier this month at Anime Expo,Bandai Namco revealed that Bleach is finally getting a new console game called Rebirth of Souls, which is the first proper release since Soul Resurrección in 2011.

As exciting as it is to finally get a new Bleach game on consoles, the reveal trailer did result in a bit of a mixed response from fans. Some weren’t happy about the game only focusing on the anime’s first two arcs, while others were disappointed that it appeared to be another simple 3D arena fighter. Well, to those in the second camp, you might want to rethink that opinion.

Bleach: Rebirth Of Souls Gameplay Showcase Shares First Look At Combat

Earlier today,Bandai Namco released a gameplay overview trailer for Bleach: Rebirth of Soulsthat gives us our first proper look at how its combat is going to work. We did get afew brief glimpses of the game in action during the reveal trailer, but this is the first time that we’re seeing a proper match play out.

The footage shows Ichigo going up against Byakuya in a one-on-one duel. Although most fans were expecting a simple arena fighter, it seems Rebirth of Souls is a bit more complicated than that, as matches seem to have a unique structure to them. To begin with, each player must try and cut down the other’s Reishi Gauge using basic attacks to unleash a more powerful attack that eliminates their Konpaku.

It seems that each fighter will start the match with nine Konpaku, which will be removed whenever their Reishi Gauge is taken down. As you might expect from an anime game, each character also has unique Spiritual Powers that can be used in the match, such as Ichigo’s All-Out Slash.

The Spiritual Power meter can also be used for Reverse Actions and Flash Steps, which gives it a bit more depth than just being used for special attacks.

It’s certainly a unique way of handling the genre’s typical combat mechanics, and it looks to give Rebirth of Souls a more cinematic vibe, as matches play out in multiple stages. The gameplay footage only shows off one match, but it’s enough to get a good idea of how Rebirth of Souls is going to do things differently.
