Summary

Final Fantasyis such a massive franchise, and has had so many beloved mainline entries, that it can be difficult to get a definitive answer as to which is the best one. It seems like everyone you ask has a different answer, and while there are fan favorites likeFinal Fantasy 7andFinal Fantasy 9, there’s always a sizable number of people defending each numbered entry with all their hearts.Yes, even Final Fantasy 13.

We can only look to the creators of Final Fantasy themselves to get “definitive” answers, and the father of the franchise - Hironobu Sakaguchi - recently spoke toInverse(thanksIGN) about which game in the series he believes is the “most complete.” If you’re thinking Sakaguchi would probably go for one of the fan favorites, you’d be wrong, as it turns out Sakaguchi is actually a big fan of Final Fantasy 6.

Hironobu Sakaguchi Thinks Final Fantasy 6 “Stands Out” In The Series

According to Sakaguchi, Final Fantasy 6 “comes close” to being the most complete game in the series, and that it “stands out above the other Final Fantasies.” Sakaguchi’s reasoning is mostly down to the time it released and the technology that was used at the time, claiming that because it was the last game in the series to use pixel art, it could use it in “all of its visual expression.”

Of course, Final Fantasy 6 is widely considered as one of the best games in the series, though it isn’t quite as beloved as a few of its successors. Sakaguchi does make a pretty valid point though, as while every other Final Fantasy has gone through dramatic visual improvements, it’s difficult to imagine Final Fantasy 6 being made to look any better than it does now while maintaining its pixel art style. It also helps that it’s just a superb game too.

With the amount of love at Square Enix for Final Fantasy 6, it’s fairly surprising the publisher hasn’t revisited it like it has with Final Fantasy 7 and possibly 9. There are apparentlyplenty of developers working at Square Enix that would like to, but Final Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase recently shot down any hopes by claiminga similar remake would take around 20 years to make. See you all in 2044!
