Summary

InFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth,Sephirothappears alongside his iconic sword, Masamune, but only when he’s in battle. When he’s out in the field, the huge blade disappears, unlike other weapons in the game, like Cloud’sBuster Sword.

It turns out that there is both a practical and in-universe explanation for this. In a recent interview withFamitsu, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Tetsuya Nomura admits that he thought depicting Sephiroth with Masamune on his back was “unnatural”. But he also says that he always intended for there to be a lore reason behind the disappearing sword, which will now be explained in the mobile game,Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis.

Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis Will Explain Why Masamune Keeps Disappearing

“As for Masamune, I was actually consulted about how to handle [it] in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,” says Nomura. “It would be unnatural to have him in the open all the time while moving around the field, and he couldn’t carry it on his back like Cloud, so we were like, ‘What should we do?’

“At that time, I told the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth team members, ‘Masamune actually has a secret, and that mystery will be revealed in Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis, so I want you to proceed in that form’”.

So, the next storyline in Ever Crisis will give us the in-universe explanation behind Masamune not being carried on Sephiroth’s back. But, in reality, it seems that Nomura just thought that it would look a little silly - which is fair. The blade is ridiculously long. Poor Sephiroth would definitely struggle to get through doors if that was on his back unless he opted to carry it around or drag it on the floor behind him, neither of which is ideal.

If you haven’t checked it out before, Ever Crisis is a mobile-exclusive gacha game, retelling the events of allFinal Fantasy 7media. It’s celebrating its anniversary today, having launched on Jun 30, 2025.
