Summary

Fallout 76is getting playable Ghouls next year, finally giving us one of the most sought-after features in the series' history. Ever since the originals, fans have wanted to be able to play as a Ghoul, so a lot is riding on Fallout 76 getting it right.

In an interview with TheGamer, Fallout 76’s creative director Jon Rush sheds more light on how playable Ghouls will work in the game. Here, Rush is eager to stress that Ghouls offer much more than an aesthetic change, with NPCs around the map reacting to your transformation.

Fallout 76 Creative Director Gives Us More Details On Playable Ghouls

“For future story updates or new content going in, where you’re interacting with NPCs and making decisions, being a Ghoul is going to be taken into account,” says Rush, speaking to me atGamescom. “That will absolutely be a factor. Things will be different if you’re a Ghoul.”

It remains to be seen what this means in practice, but from the sounds of it, the devs are taking Ghoul-prejudice into account when writing future expansions. In the mainline games, we’ve constantly seen the Ghoul population of the wasteland be treated differently based on how they look, with some settlements banishing them altogether.

In general,Bethesdais very aware of how much fans want to play as Ghouls inFallout. In fact, Rush also told me thatplayable Ghouls are being taken “into consideration” for Fallout 5, as long as there’s enough support from fans. In other words, their inclusion in Fallout 76 might be a bit of a test run, seeing how the players respond to this new playable race - the first time we’ve been able to play as a non-human in the series' history.

Playable Ghouls will be added to Fallout 76 in an update sometime in early 2025.
