Summary

Fallout 2is often considered by quite a lot of fans of the seriesas one of the best Fallout games out there, alongside titles like Fallout: New Vegas and the original game. It’s so beloved by certain fans that a group going by the name Fallout 4: Project Arroyo has been painstakingly remaking the title with Fallout 4’s engine, turning the title from a top-down experience into the Fallout we know and love today.

That includes voicing every character, reworking top-down systems like random encounters, and creating custom locations, all while retaining that classic Fallout 2 feel. It would be a difficult undertaking for a professional triple-A studio, never mind a group of fan developers, but those behind Project Arroyo are clearly dedicated, and they’ve been making pretty decent progress.

On July 4,the Twitter account behind Project Arroyoshared something that players of the remake will be looking at for quite some time, giving us a sneak peek at Fallout 2’s revamped Pip-Boy created within the Fallout 4 engine. We don’t get to see that much unfortunately, with only a small section of screen and some buttons on display, but the tweet also teases that it will be a big part of the project’s next video update.

Fallout 2 Remake Devs Reveal First Look At Revamped Classic Pip-Boy

Those behind Project Arroyo know how important the Pip-Boy is to the series, and a significant amount of effort is being made to make sure it’s just right. In our interview with project lead Damion Daponte, he explains that rather than use an existing Fallout 4 mod for the Pip-Boy, the team has gone out of their way to make their own recreation, clarifying that it will be wrist-mounted like in previous games, even though you can’t really tell in the original Fallout 2.

“Fallout 4 has a mod that’s a handheld Pip-Boy which is pretty much the Fallout 2 one - it looks exactly like it. I used that one so much in my modded playthroughs and I know it has a lot of bugs, so we can’t use that one.”

We don’t know when Project Arroyo’s next video update will drop, but Daponte stated earlier this year that the team has been making “fast progress.” The aim isto get it out on Steam to make it more accessible, and I’m sure every Fallout fan on the planet is wishing them the best.
