Summary

Scadutree Fragments are vital in Elden Ring:Shadow of the Erdtree. Without them, you won’t do much damage and you’ll die in a couple of hits. Most are pretty easy to find, often marked by giant glowing crosses or littered along the main road, but some are hidden in nooks and crannies and even within spirits holding pots over their heads.

As said byGamesRadar, if you see a wandering phantom with a literal sparkle in their eye, kill them. They’re the expansion’s answer toDemon’s Souls’crystal lizards (which you may also know fromDark Souls), dropping rare items when you first slay them.

Like the crystal lizards (and the dung beetles in base Elden Ring), they run away and fade into nothing if you’re too slow. So, be quick and hunt them down and you might find arguably the best item in the entire DLC—Scadutree Fragments. They are what strengthens your Tarnished, after all.

Scadutree Fragments Are Proving Controversial With Elden Ring Players

When the DLC finally dropped, ending the two-year wait, many fans were quick to leave negative reviews on Steamafter getting steamrolled. A quick glance at many of these complaints turned up a common thread -people weren’t engaging with the new levelling system.

Shadow of the Erdtree has an entire upgrade path exclusive to the new zone. The more Scadutree Fragments you find and use at a Site of Grace, the stronger your character becomes. These are almost necessary to get through the expansion unless you’re an incredibly skilled player.

However, a lot of fans have been voicing frustration with the new system, claiming that it’s a chore hunting down these fragments. It’s nothing new, though. The system is A) very similar to the Giant Souls in Dark Souls 2 and B) not too dissimilar to finding Golden Seeds and crafting materials in the base game. They’re hard to miss (in the review period, which meant no guides, I got to +17 and beat the DLC without too much hassle), but the idea of exploring has proven oddly controversial.
