Summary
Elden Ringplayers have figured out why Torrent is scared and can’t be summonsed inShadow of the Erdtree’s creepy new Abyssal Woods area.
Although Shadow of the Erdtree’s difficulty was one of the only things that players could talk about at launch, now that we’re nearly a month into the expansion’s life, the tides have turned to the unarguable best part ofFromSoft’s games -the lore drops. That’s right, the moment you’ve all been waiting for is here, asElden Ring fans have started scouring the DLC’s world for some very interesting tidbits.
Lots of interesting discoveries have already been made in Shadow of the Erdtree, but one of the best that I’ve seen so far focuses on the expansion’s most unique area, the Abyssal Woods. This creepy location turns the game into a secret survival horror, and it’s one that Torrent wants absolutely nothing to do with.
Here’s Why Torrent Can’t Be Summoned In The Abyssal Woods
Once you reach the Abyssal Woods in Shadow of the Erdtree, you’ll discover that Torrent can’t be summoned, as a message will pop up saying, “The spectral steed is frightened and can’t be summoned”. Most players will probably just figure it’s a game design thing and leave it at that, but it wouldn’t be a FromSoft game if there wasn’t some lore behind it.
Over on the Elden Ring subreddit, Redditor futurehousehusband69 shared a screenshot that gives a pretty good explanation as to why Torrent is afraid of the Abyssal Woods. The screenshot shows a tweet from SirJohnSekiro that reveals that the frenzied flame has the power to permanently kill spirits, which, of course, includes the beloved spectral steed.
“Spirits are eternal, and yet frenzied flame melts them away regardless. No wonder the hornsent forbid the flame’s use.
This is revealed in the item description for Surging Frenzied Flame, which is a Spiritgrave stone burned by the titular fires. Considering how frequent Frenzied Flame is in the Abyssal Woods, it’s no wonder that Torrent doesn’t want anything to do with it and refuses to come out and help the player.
This new discovery also adds some chilling context to one of the endings in Elden Ring.If you pick the Frenzied Flame ending and accept a Frenzied Flame from Melina, then you’ll hear a strange sound as Torrent’s whistle burns and disappears, implying that it’s killed him permanently. Christ, maybe Elden Ring really is a horror game.
