Summary

It’s an exciting time to be aDragon Questfan, because after much hope and speculation,Dragon Quest 3 HD2D Remake is coming out later this year. Not only that, but Dragon Quest 1 and Dragon Quest 2 will also be getting the remake treatment in 2025. In other words, by the end of 2025, the seminal Erdrick Trilogy will be available across modern consoles.

That said, not everything is peachy inDragon Questland.Because as good as it will be to get the classic games in the style of Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest fans are sorely disappointedwith Square Enix’s Collector’s Edition offering. So much so that fans are calling it a rip-off, and they may have a point.

Dragon Quest’s Collector’s Edition Is A HodgePodge Of Random Stuff

Currently, the Collector’s Edition, which is exclusive to the Square Enix store,is available for preorder alongside the standard edition of the game. When it launches, it’ll come with the following items:

The grand total for all of that is a pretty $199.99, plus applicable tax as well as shipping. In my case, a full order would run $227.48, no small amount, especially when the base game alone is a modest $59.99. And given the assortment of items, fans are displeased.

That’s because the two “exclusive” digital wallpapers will almost assuredly be shared worldwide by another user who purchased the edition. Elsewhere, the game doesn’t have a traditional steelbook, but rather a box to house the physical copy in. The digital items themselves are nice, though every DQ3 preorder will receive a separate digital bonus.

Which leaves just the acrylic figures as the only true “standout” item, and whereas the likes ofDragon Ball: Sparking! Zero are launching their Collector’s Edition with a statueand Square Enix’s own Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth Collector’s Edition arrived with a deluxe Sephiroth statue, art book, steelbook and CD among other items, Dragon Quest is simply missing the mark.

“It’s a rip off. Most low effort collectors edition I’ve seen in a while,“one user commented on Reddit. Asuperfan chimed in, writing, “I normally buy collector sets for Dragon Quest games, but the price on this is ridiculous. If it came bundled with Dragon Quest 1+2 or something else I might consider it, but I can’t stomach the price increase for a bunch of plastic character blocks and a cardboard case that will likely get dented in the mail, again.”

And they’re not the only ones, because throughout the Dragon Quest subreddit, there are all multiple posts taking issue with the Collector’s Edition. It’s no secret that Collector’s Editions by design are meant for the most hardcore of fans, hence their names. That said, it’s up to the companies to deliver in the realm of value, and so those fans can’t be blamed for determining what’s valuable and what’s not. In the case of Dragon Quest 3 HD2D Remake, that decision looks to have been rendered.
