Dragon Ball: Sparking Zerohas some surprisingly modern dialogue, as a new intro clip has revealed that Kid Trunks says “no cap” when fighting against Vegeta.
AlthoughDragon Balldoes take place in a semi-futuristic world where houses and flying cars can be summoned through capsules, it doesn’t always feel like a “modern” series. Ignoring filler episodes,the focus is almost always on martial arts, power-ups, and epic battles, whichdoesn’t leave much room for things like smartphones, the internet, or memes. Thank god.
That being said, there are times when Dragon Ball likes to remind fans that it does pay attention to what’s going on in our world. Dragon Ball Super was notably more up to date and featured more technology than the original series and Dragon Ball Z, and that looks like something that’s carrying over to Sparking Zero.
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Is Down With The Kids, Yo
As great as it is to see a ton of characters on the Sparking Zero roster, the best part about having a ton of fighters is the unique pre-match banter that takes place between them. We’ve seen lots of interesting examples of this already, but a new one has recently popped up that shows a startingly modern phrase being used by Kid Trunks.
Over on Twitter,ShykoPlays revealed that they’d played Sparking Zero early and had been able to record some of their footage. To prove this, they shared a clip of a pre-match conversation between Kid Trunks and Vegeta, which has the latter telling his son that he’ll take him to an amusement park if he lands a hit on him.
This is an obvious callback to Dragon Ball Z where the same promise is made, but Trunks' response in Sparking Zero is unique as he says, “No cap?! Let’s go!”. The clip is using the Japanese dub, so we’ll have to wait and see if that’s what Kid Trunks says in English as well, but the fact it appears in the subtitles suggests it will be.
For the uninitiated, “no cap” basically means “for real” or “no lie”.
Although it is a shock to see Dragon Ball use a phrase that’s so 2024 coded, it’s not the first time that something like this has happened.Gotenks would randomly shout “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” in Budokai Tenkaichi 2when swapping out, and,as pointed out by SLOplays, Xenoverse 2’s version of Kefla showed her saying that she’d taken an “L” and saying something was “deadass”.
