Summary

Dragon Age: The Veilguardwill let you have different relationships with Solas, saysBioWare. Following the events ofInquisition, the devs acknowledge that fans will have a variety of views on Solas, and are aiming to make The Veilguard accommodating of this.

The Veilguard’s lead writer, Trick Weekes, sums this up by saying that the game is being made for everyone, whether you “loved” or “hated” Solas. So, it seems like we will get the chance to be friendly with him after all, even if the game opens on his plans to pretty much destroy the world as we know it.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Will Let You Be Friends (Or Enemies) With Solas

“We think we have a story that will work for players who loved Solas, hated Solas, or are new to the series and have no idea who Solas is,” says Weekes.

This echoes similar comments made by creative director John Epler in an interview withGame Informer.

“Solas always feels that he is a tragic character, but a hero nonetheless,” says Epler. “So, he’s coming into this believing firmly that what you stopped him from doing was the right thing […] But because now he’s trapped, now he can’t reach out and actively affect, he needs to work with you.

“That allows us to provide a lot of nuance to that relationship because Solas sees a lot of himself in you, especially the parts of himself that he maybe doesn’t like to face,” he continues. “So there is that interesting push and pull between the two characters, Solas and the main protagonist, Rook. You can define what that relationship means.

“you’re able to continue to be suspicious and hostile towards him, or, you can start to see him and find that common ground, find that connection between the two of you, and really develop a different relationship over the course of the story.”

Withthe Inquisitor also appearing in The Veilguard, it’s likely that we’ll see that relationship reflected in the game too.

This seems to confirm that we can be friends with Solas once again. This wasn’t a guarantee, especially since earlier promotional material for the game heavily suggested that he would be the main antagonist. However, the devs have also said thatThe Veilguard is not a game about Solas, so it doesn’t seem that the plot will rely on us hating him as once suspected.

In any case, we’ll be confronting Solas ourselves soon enough. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to launch this autumn.
