Summary
Dragon Agehas given us plenty of romantic relationships over the years, andDragon Age: The Veilguardwill be no exception. Described by BioWare asthe “most romantic” Dragon Age game yet, there’s alreadya wide range of characters for players to choose from, thanks to The Veilguard making all of its companions canonically pansexual.
However, if you were hoping to have a romantic entanglement outside the party, you’re out of luck this time around. In a recent Q&A sessionon the game’s Discord channel, Dragon Age: The Veilguard creative director John Epler explained that all the romances for our Rooks are strictly with companions, and that there are no opportunities to romance NPCs like there were in previous games.

“This time, the romances for Rook are strictly within the companions,” says Epler. “We wanted to really focus on those relationships and make sure that they were as developed and as deep as we could make them.”
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Only Lets You Romance Companions
While the majority of romance options in Dragon Age have been members of your character’s party, there have been a few occasions in which we’ve been able to woo NPCs. Dragon Age: Inquisition not only allowed you to initiate romances with both Cullen and Josephine, both of whom are advisors to the Inquisitor, but it also allowed you to have a light romance with Harding, as you could often flirt with her on your outings.
In fact, Epler actually mentions your little fling with Harding in Inquisition as a “great example” of the kind of romance that won’t be included in The Veilguard, as there are no characters like her that “jumped out to us in that same way.” Instead, the team at BioWare has been “really focusing down” on making sure the romances with companions are as good as they can be this time around.
