Summary
There’s a lot to take in with the latest trailer forDragon Age: The Veilguard. The most obvious reveal is thatMorrigan is back, although some fanssuspect that there’s more to this than BioWare is letting on. It’s also been revealed that Solas' ritual has gone horrifically wrong, allowing ancient gods to rampage Thedas.
However, tucked away in the halfway point of the trailer,BioWaremight have just revealed a huge piece of lore for the dwarves - and one that’s been teased since the first game. At the 1:30 mark, we see Lace Harding use some kind of magical powers to petrify darkspawn before they can attack Rook, despite the fact that dwarves aren’t supposed to be able to use magic.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Could Introduce Dwarven Mages, Sort Of
Dwarves having magical abilities would be a huge change, and likely has something to do with Solas tearing down the Veil, since that acts as a barrier to the Fade. Fewer protections against the Fade almost definitely mean more magical shenanigans, so it’s not surprising to see someone who’s supposed to not have any magic suddenly gain abilities. Whether that actually makes dwarves mages as we know them though is unclear.
Yet that is not the only thing of note here. If you cast your mind back toDragon Age: OriginsandDragon Age 2, you’ll remember that there is another dwarf with unexplained magical abilities: Sandal. Twice in the series, we’ve found him surrounded by petrified darkspawn, although we never actually saw how he managed that. Now, it looks like Harding has the same abilities as Sandal - whatever those may be.
It’s also not much of a stretch to say that Sandal will be of some significance in The Veilguard. Back in Dragon Age 2, it was possible to hear him perfectly predict Solas' plan to tear down the Veil - even before Solas was known to fans as a character.
One day the magic will come back. All of it. Everyone will be just like they were. The shadows will part, and the skies will open wide. […] When he rises, everyone will see.
“The magic will come back” certainly seems in line with what we saw from Harding in the latest trailer. It’s also hard to imagine that it’s a coincidence that the two dwarves have the exact same powers - and both used them against darkspawn.
Thankfully, we don’t have too much longer to wait until we get answers. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to launch on October 31.
