Summary

BioWarewantsDragon Age: The Veilguard’s opening mission to makeInquisiton’s finale look like a “minor inconvenience”. As part of this, The Veilguard will throw us straight into the action, kicking off with Solas' plan to tear down the Veil.

This was explained by The Veilguard’s director Corinne Busche in an interview with Edge Magazine (thanks,GamesRadar). Here, Busche says that BioWare wanted The Veilguard’s first mission to “feel like the finale of any other game”, suggesting we’re in for a big change compared to how otherDragon Agestories have opened.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Opening Will Feel Like A Finale, Says BioWare

“We wanted the prologue to feel like the finale of any other game we’ve done. Where it puts you right into this media-res attack on a city and gets you really invested in the action and the story right away,” says Busche.

“When I think back to Inquisition, how the sky was literally tearing open […] the impact of [Solas'] ritual really makes that look like a minor inconvenience.”

True enough, what we saw in the gameplay demo was pretty intense for an opening. Here, we saw Rook and their companions - including Varric - get in the way of Solas' plans. This causedtwo figures to be freed from the Fade, who are described as “ancient and powerful adversaries” to Solas who aim for “complete and utter domination of our world”. Many also believe thatVarric is going to kick the bucket at some point in the game, and if that were to happen in the opening, it would be brutal.

That isn’t to say that this will be the first Dragon Age game with a dramatic opening. Inquisition threw us into the swing of things fairly quickly, as we’re immediately up close and personal with the Breach and all the demons it’s spewing out.Dragon Age 2kicked off with the Blight fromDragon Age: Origins, killing off a couple of characters for good measure. Origins is the only exception to this, as it eased us in with one of the titular origin paths first -something fans want the series to do again.

In any case, we’ll see how dramatic The Veilguard’s opening really is when the game launches this autumn.
