Summary
We’ve been getting a lot more information aboutDragon Age: The Veilguardover the past few weeks, as we get closer and closer to the game’s rumored release window. For example, it was revealed earlier today that The Veilguard will begetting rid of the tactical camera, whilst alsoforcing you to swap out your party characters more often, possibly because of the game’scontroversial two-party member system.
Even more info is being dropped on the game’s newly created Discord server too, including new details on the game’s Darkspawn. What with it having been almost a decade since the last Dragon Age game was released, it’s understandable that some of the iconic monsters have been redesigned somewhat, and the Darkspawn are no exception.
However,BioWarehas been facinga little bit of backlash from fans over the new Darkspawn designs, specifically the ogre that can be seen in one of the screenshots ina blog post on the studio’s official website. They’re quite a drastic departure from the Darkspawn we’ve seen in titles like Dragon Age: Origins, but The Veilguard creative director John Epler assures fans they haven’t been changed for no reason.
When asked by a fan about Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s new Darkspawn and whether the changes mean anything, Epler claimed that it’s “more than just a visual redesign,” but that giving away the main reason behind their new appearance would be a spoiler. It’s pretty vague as answers go, but it is confirmation that there is a story reason behind the changes to the Darkspawn and that it may play a key role in the game.
In the Reddit thread above, the most agreed upon theory is that Red Lyrium is the cause behind the Darkspawn’s new appearance, mostly because of their glowing red eyes. It’s a solid theory, especially since Red Lyrium is caused by the Taint infecting regular Lyrium, so it stands to reason that Red Lyrium could further infect that Darkspawn.
Another theory is that the Evanuris could have something to do with it, specifically Ghilan’nain, who we know likes to dabble in twisted experiments with various different life forms. In either case, we won’t know for sure what BioWare is cooking until we finally get Dragon Age: The Veilguard in our hands. We’ll be getting the release date at some point this month, most likely at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 20, so we won’t have to wait too long before we can find out when we’ll be able to dive into the story.
