Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s difficulty options have been revealed, and there are some very different options to choose from. The nextDragon Agegame will have everything from a no-death mode for those who want to avoid a game over, to a Nightmare mode that is described as a “permanent selection”.
This comes from a new preview fromGame Informer. During this preview, it’s said that there were three difficulty options to choose from, Storyteller, Adventurer, and Nightmare. The latter doesn’t seem to be something you can toggle on mid-playthrough, and will have to be selected from the start.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Difficulty Explained
The preview says that we can change the difficulty at any point during our time with The Veilguard, unless we pick Nightmare. With this in mind, it could work similarly toHonour ModeinBaldur’s Gate 3, whichdidlet you turn the difficulty down, but you could never then raise it back up to Honour Mode afterwards. This incentivises players to mix up strategies when they’re stuck, rather than give in to the temptation to put the difficulty down.
However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing here for those who want to take it easy. If you’re only interested in the story, then the Storyteller option is right there. You can even turn off character deaths which will presumably stop you from ever getting a game over. If you want a mix of all of the above, there’s the Unbound option too, which lets you customise your experience, like putting on aim assist and changing how much damage enemies can dish out.
This is quite different from previous games, but that’s hardly surprising. The Veilguard is already changing much about the Dragon Age formula that we’ve been familiar with for almost 15 years now. For example, The Veilguard brings us down to parties of three, not four, and we won’t be able to directly control our companions. It seems that this will be a much more action-oriented game on the whole, but we’ll see for ourselves when The Veilguard launches later this year.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the long-awaited fourth game in the fantasy RPG series from BioWare formerly known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. A direct sequel to Inquisition, it focuses on red lyrium and Solas, the aforementioned Dread Wolf.
