WhenCapcom first announced that Dead Rising was getting a Deluxe Remaster(that’s basicallya remake in all but name), it looked like it was going to be very faithful to the 2006 classic while polishing the visuals and updating several of the gameplay mechanics.Having played it for myself, I can confirm that’s the case, although it’s not just the gameplay and graphics that have been changed.
Over the past few weeks, it’s been confirmed that Deluxe Remaster is changing some of the original game’s content for the re-release. We’ve already reported on the"Erotica" photo category being removedandLarry Chiang being redesigned, but new gameplay footage has revealed that Cliff’s background has been tweaked too.
In the original version of Dead Rising, Cliff Hudson is an optional Psychopath who can be encountered in a hardware store. When Frank enters, he sees a bunch of beheaded people tied up to the ceiling, before encountering Cliff, who accuses him of being a member of the Viet Cong and calls him a communist before attacking him.
Cliff is clearly suffering from PTSD from his experience in the Vietnam War and admits as much when defeated, explaining that he snapped when he heard his granddaughter being eaten by the undead. Considering how most Dead Rising Psychopaths are more focused on being silly, it’s a startingly emotional scene and a highlight of the original game.
In Deluxe Remaster, however, Cliff’s dialogue has been changed significantly so that he’s not a veteran of a real-world war. Instead of asking Frank if he’s in the Viet Cong, Cliff just says that he’s a “mole” and then calls him an “animal” instead of a communist.It’s a change that Dead Rising fans aren’t happy about, as shown over on the game’s subreddit page.
