Summary

Night City is a dangerous place. BetweenCyberpunk 2077’sgang warfare, its numerous criminal enterprises, and the many wired cyberpsychos, the neon metropolis is not somewhere I’d necessarily want to be caught walking alone.

It’s clear that the city’s residents aren’t too savory, but one player got the shock of their lives when they recently discovered that actually, Cyberpunk 2077’s vending machines can be evil too.

A “Shocking” Cyberpunk Discovery

Walking around theCorpo Plazaarea ofNight City, Cyberpunk 2077 player and Reddit userAway-Yogurtcloset733headed towards a row of Spontaneous Craving Satisfaction vending machines, one of which was in use by another of the city’s residents.

As the player’s V got closer to the machines, the would-be snacker who was already there was jolted by a burst of electricity, causing him to fall to the floor and suddenly die.

After taking the guy’s belongings, a quick scan of thevending machineby Yogurtcloset revealed that it had “damaged circuitry”, which could have caused the fatal shock. Whether the circuitry made the machine conscious enough to deliberately shock the poor fellow, or whether it was an accident remains to be seen. The denizen could be seen giving the machine a fair whack, providing evidence for the former, so retaliation wouldn’t have been the biggest surprise.

Yogurtcloset then approached the vending machine to find stacks of credits rolling from the item collection area. Doing what any good person would, he began looting the cash. It wasn’t long, though, until they themselves were presumably targeted by the machine. The sound of electricity hit V, causing them to falter and a “Caution! Power Surge Detected” message to appear.

The encounter is one of the first of its kind and could be a callback to Stephen King’s 1986 movieMaximum Overdrive. A famous scene from the picture sees a vending machine come alive and aggressively start to fire cans of drinks at those around it.

Commenting onthe Reddit thread, one user suspects, “just like with Witcher 3, CDPR has added enough random encounters to fill years more of discovery!”
