Summary
It doesn’t matter if you are a cat lover or not, the Cat Quest games are an amazing series of open-world RPGs that combine cute graphics, fun gameplay, and amazing and funny storylines. From raiding dungeons, and finding loot to exploring the large open worlds, these titles have everything you could want from a casual, adventure game, and they do it in their cute and unique style.
There are three Cat Quest games out right now and while all of them share a similar concept, there are quite a few differences that make each of them stand out and this list will rank them all on this basis.
Cat Quest seems to beone of the few rare series that gets better with every new addition. The original Cat Quest 1 is a classic game that exceeded the expectations of a lot of players, who weren’t expecting such an incredible and fun experience from what looked to be a fairly simple game from the outside.
Although the game starts off with a serious cut-scene that feels as if it is setting up for a typical, dark RPG storyline, you will soon realize that the main storyline doesn’t play too big of a role, and the game is mostly aboutclever cat-based humor, a lot of fun quests and sidequests that provide a huge variety of loot, and a lot of exploration.
The main charm of the Cat Quest series relies on how simple and casual it is, and that is especially the case for the first game, whichdoesn’t needlessly complicate anythingand is fun and easy to pick up for any player. The enemy variety is pretty low and most of them aren’t too hard to deal with. The hack-and-slash combat is very simple, and the magic spells add a slight level of complexity, but they are still quite simple for any RPG player.
As there is no fast travel, you will spend a lot of time walking around the relatively small map, moving through different towns, and finding hidden pathways, which feels fun even after you are several hours into the game. All-in-all,Cat Quest 1 is a brilliant, casual gamethat only ranks in third spot due to how much its successors improved on its basics, rather than through any fault of its own.
Cat Quest 2 takes the core elements of its predecessor and improves on them to make a much more complete game. While a lot of the features in both entries are the same, the storyline of Cat Quest 2 is a huge upgrade and focuses on the war between the Cat Kingdom and the Dog Empire.
The humor is still just as good, and it makes you wonder how this series can come up with so many cat puns and still be funny. However, the most important factor that makes Cat Quest 2 better is that it can be played co-op with a friend, which just adds to the fun and makes the whole experience a lot better.
Combat is a lot more varied in Cat Quest 2due to the addition of new weapon types, and the fact that there are two protagonists that you can switch between allows you to be a little more creative with your strats. There are also two worlds to explore in this game, both of which are packed with new characters, loot, quests, and dungeons.
The fact that Cat Quest 2 doesn’t stray away from the formula which made the series so good and just improves on it, while adding additional content, is what makes it a much more complete game.
With the high standards set by the first two games, there is no doubt that there were a lot of expectations fromCat Quest 3, and it somehow managed to surpass all of them once again.
Unlike the Cat Kingdom setting of the previous game, most of the action takes place across a bunch of islands that you can travel to easily from your ship. Thispirate-esque settingmakes for a fun change-up and makes room for even more puns, such as the Purribean Sea and the Great Purrier Reef. The fact that you take full charge of your ship and the presence of naval combat adds another cool yet simple dynamic to the gameplay.
Although the number of quests and side-quests are less than they were in Cat Quest 2, they area lot more refined and the puzzles feel a lot more challenging and unique. There are also quite a few endings you’re able to get, based on the number of Pirate Lords you defeat before the final boss fight. The New Game Plus mode also lets you replay the game over and over again to find the true ending and also level up your skills as much as possible.
Adding a completely different theme to the series, while sticking to the formula which made it so good, is why Cat Quest 3 is our favorite entry among the three. The fact that it also comes with a lot more replayability value than its predecessors is an added bonus.
