Summary

Monster Hunter Wildsis easily one of next year’s most anticipated titles, partly because the wait for a new game in the series has been so long.Monster Hunter Worldwas released all the way back in 2018, and despite it being one of Capcom’s most successful games ever, we’ll have waited a whopping seven years for a new one when Monster Hunter Wilds releases next year.

In an industry that loves both money and sequels, that’s quite surprising, butCapcomhas recently revealed exactly why the wait for a new mainline Monster Hunter game has been so long. According to art director Kaname Fujioka in an interview withGame Developer, the massive popularity of Monster Hunter World is partly the reason behind the wait, specifically it’s massive player base.

Monster Hunter World’s Popularity Is The Reason Why Wilds Took So Long

Back in March this year, Capcom announced thatMonster Hunter World has sold over 25 million copies, cementing its status as the publisher’s best-selling game ever made. That’s a lot of people playing one game, and Fujioka explains that the more people play a game, the more you have to take into account a “broader level of skill levels and experience.”

“The more people came on board the series, the more we had to think about how we actually meet our users' needs when we start a new project.”

With the explosion of players brought about by the success of Monster Hunter World, Capcom was no longer catering to a relatively niche audience, so more effort has been put into making sure Monster Hunter Wilds is a game that caters to every part of the player base. Add to that the dramatic changes being made to the standard Monster Hunter formula, like the open world setting, and you can begin to see why Capcom has taken its time.

Thankfully, the wait for Monster Hunter Wilds shouldn’t be that much longer, given how much Capcom has been showing it off recently. Its latest trailer was shared during Gamescom Opening Night Live this month, in which we sawa massive new spider monster revealed, and we’ll likely get even more reveals in the coming months.

We still only have a vague release window of 2025 to jot down in the calendar, but with how much footage Capcom has been showing off recently, you’d have to assume it’s early 2025 rather than the holiday period. In any case, fingers crossed we get to experience some monster slaying goodness sooner rather than later.
