Update: 07-05-2025 23:39PM BST - Outraged fans of the mod have been flocking to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered Steam page to review bomb the title, with its recent review scoredropping to Mostly Negative as a result.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2has a special place in many gamers' hearts, mostly down to its excellent multiplayer. We’ve all spent far too longtrying to jump onto the roof on Highrise, sitting at the top of the tower on Rust, and running around causing chaos in Terminal, and a recently released mod forCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remasteredaimed to restore that classic multiplayer feeling.

In fact, it actually succeeded too, having delighted fans as they tried it out, as content creators jumped in and started making their own videos on the project. Surprisingly,the release of the mod also caused a huge spike in players too, having risen from barely nothing to over 2,000 recurring players in just a few days, though a discount that occurred at the same time may have helped a bit.

Of course, that level of popularity was always going to bring the wrong kind of attention to the project, and the mighty legal team atActivision Blizzardhave now unfortunately stepped in and ruined everyone’s fun.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered’s Multiplayer Mod Has Been Shut Down

In a statement via the mod’s official Twitter page, it was revealed that Activision has allegedly sent a cease and desist order to the team members behind it, forcing them to shut down the project right before it could become available to more of the public.

Mod creator Watchful Wolf has also madea tweet about the situation via their personal account, though it’s incredibly brief. Watchful Wolf has simply said “I’m sorry” to fans about the whole situation, but they do also make a follow-up, more resistant tweet claiming that the team behind the project will just “make our own unique game.” Might as well do something productive with all that rightful spite.

There does seem to be a lot of support for one though, as several fans of the project are urging Watchful Wolf to create some kind of Gofundme or Kickstarter to fund it. It’ll be interesting to see where the team goes from here and if they make good on their promise and manage to capture the feeling of Modern Warfare 2 in a completely different game. Only time will tell.
