Summary
After a noteworthy series of events,Bungie has informed fans that it remains “committed” to Destiny. More so, the future ofDestiny, which had been called into question, will be revealed “soon.”
News of Destiny’s status comes by way of a series of posts on Twitter. In them, the official Destiny 2 Team accountshared word of a new “multi-year journey,” as well as a commitment to “transparency” regarding the live-service franchise.
Here’s what they had to say:
Just several days ago,Bungiemade headlineswhen it announced that it would be undergoing its second round of mass layoffs in as many years. The most recent series of layoffs sawthe elimination of 220 roles, or about 17 percent of the studio’s workforce.Of the 220 developers to lose their jobs was The Final Shape narrative lead Kwan Perng.
Following the news,it had been reported that the layoffs forced Bungie to indefinitely shelve “Project Payback.“The internal codenamewas supposedly what Destiny 3 was being developed under. Thatnews was then put on ice by insider Jason Schreier, who reported that Destiny 3 was not a project that was being worked on at the studio.
Rather, the “Project Payback” that had been discussed was a spin-off title in the Destiny universe. It was not a true Destiny 3, and it had been scrapped already, per the reporting.
Now, it officially looks like Destiny is not dead. The fact that a “multi-year journey” is being officially mentioned should provide fans with hope of a potential third game. That said, until Bungie properly holds a conference, your guess is as good as ours.
