Summary

TheBorderlandsmovie is a train wreck. Itstruggled to sell tickets for its advanced screenings, early reviewscalled it “unfunny” and “visually repulsive”, which only got worse as more reviews came out, and its Rotten Tomatoes scorestayed at zero percentfor far longer than Eli Roth would have hoped.

It has now climbed to six percent on thereview aggregator, but another, Metacritic, has it at alowly 29. Surprisingly, however, while a 29 on Metacritic is abysmal, it doesn’t even put Borderlands in the ten worst video game adaptations of all time.

“It makes you want to go home and blow up your PlayStation.”

As more reviews rolled out, so did the scathing critiques. The Independentsaid it was “alienating to fans of the game and incomprehensible to the casual viewer,” and theNew York Postcalled it “the worst movie of the year.” The condemnation continued, with Roth’s picture called “a children’s film that’s too violent for children to actually watch,” “wacko BS,” and a “disorderly shambles”.

These harsh but probably fair remarks make it the joint-third worst-reviewed film of the year, according to Metacritic. It shares third place with Poolman and sits just behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 with a score of 27 and Madame Web sitting on 26.

The Top Ten Worst Video Game Adaptations, According To Metacritic

Video game adaptations throughout history are notoriously bad. But, recently, the trend has been bucked with the excellent adaptations ofThe Last of UsandFallout, and even movies likeSonic the HedgehogandDetective Pikachuare a far cry from those at the bottom of the barrel. But that brings us on to Borderlands.

Its score of 29 is miserable, but, according toMetacritic, that doesn’t even make it one of the ten worst adaptations of all time, let alone the worst — that honor goes toAlone in the Dark(2005).

Uwe Boll was famous for making bad tie-in movies, but Alone in the Dark is by far his worst, sitting at a staggering nine on the review aggregation website. Boll’s movies take up a further four spots on the list, withHouse of the Deadin third, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale in fourth,BloodRaynein seventh, andPostalin ninth. The rest of the top ten is made up ofMortal Kombat Annihilation,Silent Hill: Revelation,Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li,Wing Commander, andHitman: Agent 47. So, where does that leave Borderlands?

This year’s surefire flop sits just outside the top ten, in 11th place, is the worst-reviewed video game movie since 2015, and is only the third to review a score below 30 since 2010.

Who knows, with a few more negative reviews, it could soon find itself in the unwanted number ten spot.
