There are tons of games out there that involve a rich and complex storyline, but for the most part, you will get the same story experience as most other players. Are there games that give you the freedom to forge your own story though?

Here, we are going to take a look at some of the best games that let you create your own story. This will involve a wide variety of genres for you to choose from, with many of these games being available on multiple platforms. Overall, you’re bound to find a game that speaks to you.

RimWorld Colonists using recreation activities

First up, we have Rimworld. While there is a basic premise of crashlanding on a foreign planet, the rest of the story is completely up to you. Interested in providing lavish living quarters and plenty of food options to your colonists? Or are you feeling like being the overlord of a cannibalistic group of people?

This is my personal favorite game on the list! Even without the DLC, Rimworld can deliver hundreds of hours worth of content. There are also tons of mods available from the Steam Workshop, making the gameplay even more unique.

The story of Rimworld completely depends on your choices. There are external events that can occur, but your preparednessdepends on every action that you have taken thus far.

Minecraft

Minecraft is the ultimate make-your-own story game. There is absolutely no in-game story, allowing you to create your own from scratch. With hundreds of blocks available, you can craft the world around you exactly how you see fit.

By playing alone, you can construct your own RPG, but with other players on the server, you can have an entertaining roleplaying experience. Overall, Minecraft lets you do pretty much anything you want.

Kenshi

Kenshi is an open-world survival game, making it the perfect setting for creating your own story. Starting from making your own character, everything is up to you. Of course, Kenshi is notoriously very hard, so your story may involve multiple deaths.

Once you manage to survive though, you can become anything you want. This can be as simple as a humble farmer, or as grand as a warlord in charge of soldiers that follow your every command.

The Sims franchise is an absolute classic when it comes to games that let you create your own story. Rather than surviving in an open world, you may make your own individual Sims and families. With these Sims, you can socialize, go to work, have hobbies, andget married.

The story is pretty much whatever you want. If you decide that the story calls for an immediate divorce, you can make that happen. If, on the other hand, the story calls for another child, then you can start trying for a baby.

Dwarf Fortress Living quarters

Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress launched back in 2006 and went on to inspire a variety of games such as Minecraft and Rimworld, which appeared earlier on our list. Overall, Dwarf Fortress is pretty similar to Rimworld; build a colony, survive, and manage the inhabitants.

Although this game came out a while ago, you can play the Steam version, which launched in 2022. This newer version has improved graphics, which is a big upgrade from the original, which has ASCII graphics.

Project Zomboid Mods Unlock ViZion Map Scope

Project Zomboid leans into the zombie survival genre, but you are still able to create your own story, as the way you survive is completely up to you. Prior to starting the game, you will also be able to choose your own profession.

Some profession options include Metalworker, Fitness Instructor, Park Rager, and even Burglar. The occupation that you choose can help boost certain skills. The job, traits, and appearance you create can dictate how the story plays out.

Divinity Original Sin 2 - character art of Lohse Fane Ifan Sebille Beast and Red Prince

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an RPG set in a rich fantasy world; still, it manages to give you the freedom to decide how your story plays out. This is a Dungeons and Dragons-style game, presenting you with plenty of playstyles to choose from.

While there is a storyline present, your own choices will be quite impactful. Interestingly, you’re able to also make your own campaign for other players to complete. Yes, you can completely customize the game to make your very own story.

Soldiers march towards each other near a border in Sid Meier’s Civilization 6.

Lastly, we have Civilization 6. This is a strategy game thatpits you against other nationson a closed map. While it’s possible to play with no story in mind, you can also implement your own. Feel like playing as the Japanese and going to war with Greece with Canada fighting by your side? Go for it!

The story unfolds as you make military and political choices, but there is no true narrative. With friends though, you’re able to basically roleplay as world powers as each civilization advanced in their technology and culture.
