Summary
Even though now more than ever many of us return to the things we loved as kids once we’re all grown up, there’s a time in your childhood when you shed the hobbies you had as a kid because you feel like you’ve outgrown them. Mattel is attempting to prevent that from happening quite as quickly via its new range of Barbies - Dream Besties. A set of dolls geared towards slightly olderBarbiefans, each of them aspiring to be something that might be on the minds of teenagers as their love for Barbies and dolls begins to fade.
There are four dolls in Barbie’s new Dream Besties collection and all of them are available now for $19.99 each. Two of the dolls are Barbie variants -Malibu Robertswho aspires to own her own make-up company, andBrooklyn Robertswho wants to be a famous choreographer - and the other two Dream Besties are friends of Barbie, each of them with other big dreams relevant to today’s world.

The dimensions of the Dream Besties are different from the Barbie norm. They’re shorter and attempt to better represent body diversity.
Renee Chaowants to have her own food and travel show, and Teresa Rivera will be the CEO of a video game company if all goes to plan. That’s right, there’s now a Barbie who wants to run a video game company. Teresa’s doll comes with all sorts of video game accessories, including headphones, keyboard, and a backpack designed to look like a generic retro handheld console. Teresa looks more like a gamer than a gaming CEO, though gaming CEO Barbie would just be a doll in a suit. Making the doll look like someone who actually likes games is a lot more fun.

Barbie Dream Besties Teresa Rivera
Part of Barbie’s Dream Besties collection, Teresa Rivera aspires to one day own a video game company. The doll has different dimensions to regular Barbie dolls in an attempt to better represent body diversity and comes with gaming accessories that reflect the doll’s dreams.
The other three dolls in the Dream Besties collection also come with accessories relevant to the dream jobs they’re working towards. The Malibu make-up Barbie has a hairdryer and lipstick, Brooklyn Barbie has a little ring light and smartphone for filming dance routines, and Renee has a slice of pizza and the laptop she’ll need to write all about it. The Dream Besties will feature in music videos and a YouTube series throughout the summer to give them more personality and hopefully draw in the older kids Mattel is attempting to appeal to with this new range.
The Dream Besties collection has a different target audience thanthe Mini BarbieLand rangethat launched earlier this year. Following in the footsteps of Polly Pocket, the sets shrink Barbie and her world down to size. There’s evena miniature version of Ken’s Mojo Doja Casa Housefrom the Barbie movie.
