Summary

Baldur’s Gate 3is huge, butLarianhad even more locations planned - and they could have had major story implications. Most significantly, Wyll was supposed to have an entirely unique area, and Gortash wasn’t supposed to be introduced to us in the titular city of Baldur’s Gate.

This comes from a report fromPC Gamer, in which Larian sheds some light on Baldur’s Gate 3’s development. There’s a quick overview of some of the locations that were cut during development, never making it into the final game.

Larian Reveals Cut Locations For Baldur’s Gate 3

For starters, Wyll was supposed to have his own area called the Red War College. I am admittedly not as knowledgeable on The Forgotten Realms lore as some, but it seems that this would have been a unique creation for the game, so it’s unclear what this would have involved. However, it may have been attached to another quest for Wyll - something fans would have welcomed as some find the quest hedidget a little lacklustre compared to other companions.

Larian boss Swen Vincke hashinted at this location in the past, saying it would have included a “big moment” for Wyll.

As for Candlekeep,we already knew that this was considered for Baldur’s Gate 3, but now we know that this was supposed to be part of Gortash’s introduction. Fans of the originalBaldur’s Gategames will remember this as the home of the protagonist, Gorion’s Ward, who is a Bhaalspawn. It’s curious then that Gortash, the chosen of Bane, was hanging around here, but not all that surprising given that the Dead Three are working together.

Outside of that, the report also mentions locations for the Shadow Druids and gnomes, presumably in Act 1. However, given that the first act is already huge (especially in comparison to the much smaller Act 2) it’s unsurprising that these were scrapped. The report mentions that Larian was reluctant to include smaller areas, since that limited what players could get up to in them.
