Summary

While it was pretty disappointing to learn that Avowed had been delayed until July 24, 2025, there is still some good news to be had. That’s because director Carrie Patel revealed new information about theAvowed’sstoryline, including the sheer number of endings that exist.

In an interview with IGN as part of Gamescom, Patel shared that there isn’t just one ending. When asked about how many, they had this to say:

That’s very hard to say.

I can tell you that our ending slides number in the double digits, and you may end up with a lot of different combinations of them.

The ending slides are in reference to the post-game images that provide context about the world after the player has completed the game. Double digits certainly are more than 10, which means that there will be no shortage of unique endings.

Patel added:

This is an Obsidian game, so your ending is really the sum total of your choices across the game, across a lot of pieces of content, depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it.

In other words, no two player experiences will likely be the same. More so, that approach absolutely encourages replayability in order to see how different actions impact the world. Patel noted that, “There’s a lot of freedom in how you progress,” so it’ll be interesting to see which routes players take.

No Canon, No Problem

With so many potential endings and tons of player freedom, there might be concern about whether there is a “true” ending. It turns out, there isn’t.

“In my opinion, there’s never a canon ending,” Patel said. “It’s your experience.”

That’s super refreshing to hear, as it’ll encourage players to really make the game their own, instead of trying to conform their actions in order to get the “true” ending. It’s unfortunate that the game won’t be coming this year, but it sure does sound like Obsidian has a potential gem on its hands when the game does launch.
