“I’m hearing that Obsidian is about to announce an Avowed delay to early 2025,” The Verge reports. “I understand Avowed is in good shape, this is more a matter of wanting to give the game breathing room outside of a very busy period for Xbox Game Pass…”
Xbox Wants Breathing Room For Avowed
The holiday period is indeed becoming busy for Game Pass, with games likeCall of Duty: Black Ops 6, Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl and Bethesda’s Indiana Jones and the Great Circle all planned to release near the end of the year.
Obsidian has ramped up its marketing of Avowed in recent months, following the release of astory trailerand subsequent gameplay snippets. In an interview withGame Informer, game director Carrie Patel remarked that Avowed is going to be closer to The Outer Worlds than The Elder Scrolls, a comparison that’s been drawn since Avowed’s announcement in 2020.
Avowed was originally directly inspired by The Elder Scrolls, but the project changed direction in 2021 and adopted a tone similar to Pillars of Eternity, its isometric counterpart. For those unfamiliar with Pillars, that means we’re going to be getting a politically grey experience with undertones of metaphysics and divinity.
June’s story trailer revealed the basic premise of Avowed. The player (a Godlike) is sent to the Living Lands, a sort of untamed fringe province of the Aedyran Empire. The Emperor tasks the player with solving the Dreamscourge, a physical and spiritual illness that turns its victims into fungal zombies.
We can see from the trailer that there’s going to be a conflict between those who want the Living Lands ‘tamed’ and others who enjoy its natural chaos. Though that trailer explicitly states ‘Coming 2024’, that may no longer be the case if reports are true.
