Summary

Like any good survival game,Falloutincorporates a hunger system into their many open world adventures. But when every inch of the Wasteland is riddled with radiation, it can be hard to find food that won’t outright kill you. But remember: what doesn’t kill you gives you an extreme case of food poisoning. Still, survival means survival, so if we HAD to eat some of the local wildlife, which ones would make for the easiest meal?

You might get through the list and wonder why certain creatures were not included. Maybe it’s because they were too similar to other entries, maybe we genuinely believe them to be rather inedible, or maybe it’s a thinly veiled attempt to promote engagement with the comment section. Which one is true? We’ll never tell. We will tell you our favorite way to prepare each creature, though.

This list isn’t about how dangerous the creatures are either, but how edible they are, so assume that you just happen to come across a fresh, already killed body of each animal.

9Yao Guai

In terms of mutations, yao guai got off lucky. Originating from black bears, they trade their fluffy fur for being extra yoked. So what’s the problem? It’s what’s in their meat. Almost all bears are infected witha parasite called Trichinella. If you don’t prepare bear meat in a specific way, you can get trichinosis. Roundworms squirming through your muscles is already a painful and terrifying experience, and we can only imagine what radioactive trichinella are capable of. So while ‘edible’, we don’t think you SHOULD eat a yao guai.

Yao Guai Stew Recipe

Ingredients: Yao Guai Meat, Clean (enough) water, tato paste, whatever veggies you can find.

8Mirelurks

With how prominent mirelurks are, and how much succulent meat they have, you’d think they’re a shoo-in for edible eating in the Wasteland. But we’re not as sure. While meaty, they’re based on a mix between blue crabs and horseshoe crabs. The latter of which are only barely edible. Sure, you CAN eat them, but odds are you’ll get sick after. As such, we rank it lower than most.

Ingredients: Mirelurk meat, mutfruit wedges, an egg, crushed up crackers.

7Snallygaster

Everyone gets to have one weird pick, right? Based on Maryland cryptid folklore, the Snallygaster doesn’t really have a real-world animal to compare to. It does, however, have quite a few legs. Limbs make for easier eating, since they don’t contain any of those pesky acid-producing organs found on the rest of the snallygaster. The legs also have the fewest eyes on them, which should make for less-horrifying harvesting.

Snallygaster Legs Recipe

Ingredients: Snallygaster Legs, Brahmin milk, two eggs, razorgrain flour, corn meal, beer (if you can get a hold of some)

6Grafton Monster

Everyone getstwoweird picks… right..? Just hear me out: that is a LOT of meat on one creature, and it’s most likely generally safe to eat. It has a harmful bile that it shoots out of its mouth, but if you avoid the digestive tract, you’re looking at more food than you could possibly need. Being almost all muscle, that’s easy harvesting and plenty of food. Just don’t think about what exactly the Grafton Monster is, exactly.

Pulled Grafton Monster Taco Recipe

Ingredients: Grafton Monster meat, shredded Brahmin cheese, corn tortillas, an onion (do those still exist?)

5Hermit Crab

In Fallout, hermit crabs have gone from being tiny and cute pets to bus-sized crustaceans that take ZERO attitude. Unfortunately for them, this newfound size turns them into fantastic food sources. If you can get a hold of one, you’ll have enough protein to feed an entire settlement. And from what I hear, it’s not bad eatin'. The biggest hurdle is the vehicular shell they hide within. Extended time inside them means you’ll have to be extra careful to remove any rust and motor oil from the body before cooking with it.

Wasteland Paella Recipe

Ingredients: Giant hermit crab, cut into two inch pieces, uncooked rice, water, powdered ash rose, mutfruit zest, cooking oil, onion, dried peppers

4Gulper

It’s easy to not consider eating something that could swallow you whole, but if you’re able to snag one, a gulper will make for a fantastic lunch. The meat of the gulper will be sweet but mildly flavored, but very rich in nutrients. But most importantly, the muddy waters of their natural environment means they’ll also develop a high level of geosmin in the meat, giving it a bit of a muddy flavor. This means they’d make for an amazing substitute for most catfish-style dishes.

Crispy Fried Gulper Recipe

Ingredients: Gulper meat cut in strips, brahmin milk, razorgrain flour, corn meal, oil.

3Deathclaw

As if the novelty of eatingthe world’s most dangerous creaturewasn’t enough, these truck sized reptiles would make for some surprisingly tasty snacks. While the overall form is generally mild flavored, with a firm texture, the leg and jaw meat is especially tasty. Instead of hiding the mild flavor behind a complicated dish, curing it into a preserved meat will help condense the flavor and ensure none of it is wasted.

Ingredients: deathclaw meat, a marinade of seasonings, salt.

2Sheepsquatch

This one isn’t too hard to understand. Remove the quills, and you basically have a big serving of mutton available. The hardest part about this one is that there is a legitimate risk that you’llencounter the robotic versioninstead, which has remarkable less usable meat than the actual Sheepsquatch.

Sheepsquatch Masala Recipe

Ingredients: Sheepsquatch meat, onion, tato, brahmin yogurt, peppers, xander root, ginseng root, bloodleaf, powdered soot flower, water.

1Brahmin And Radstags

You probably saw this coming, but the easiest animals to cook are going to be the two most common hoofed mammals in the wasteland. Both creatures are sizable, offering plenty of easy to prepare meat that still resembles their pre-nuke counterparts, just with more heads. As such, preparing them would be no different in the Wasteland. Their lack of acid producing organs make them automatically more edible than half of the things we find out there, anyway.

Wasteland Burgers Recipe

Ingredients: Brahmin beef or Radstag venison, razorgrain flour, water, tato, cabbage, potato (optional)

By the way, if it wasn’t clear: these recipes are purely for entertainment, and we really don’t recommend attempting to cook anything with their instructions.
